Montserrat Vargas

Montserrat Vargas is a Chilean multidisciplinary artist based in New York. She holds two degrees from Chilean universities, one in Acting from Universidad Mayor and one in Arts Education from Universidad de Los Lagos.

She is currently an Associate Member of the Nettles Artists Collective, with whom she performs regularly. She has been their assistant director on the original play Apple Of My Eye, the first play written and performed by a woman with Down syndrome, Brazilian actress Tathiana Piancastelli. She is also a collaborator with Group.Br, a Brazilian physical theater company based in Brooklyn, and with LaMicro Theater. In 2014, she presented a performance installation at Movement Research called “Mouthful Annihilation”, an exploration of women issues in collaboration with Andressa Furletti.

In 2015, Montserrat represented contemporary Chilean poetry in New York at Spring Under the 7 (May 7th) organized by Centro Cultural Barco de Papel, besides that event she participate at the monthly Open Mic organized by Alejandro Barragan with Inner City Times  and  she will present this year, her first multidisciplinary solo exhibition called La Mordida: The Bite & The Bitten, which explores teeth as a representation of violence, immigration, love, and women’s objectification, presented through embroidery, photography, poetry, sculpture, and live performance.

In pursuit of her rock star dream Montserrat practices electric bass, and wears men’s underwear.
